The most extreme eruption of the Toba Volcano - its latest, 73,000 years ago - being the largest to hit the earth in two million years.
Size caldera 18 x 60 miles - the lava flow covered 20,000 to 30,000 km2 of the Sumatra Island - ranging from coast to coast with an average thickness of 50 meters - The ashes of Toba Volcano were found in Central India, 3,000 Kilometers away from the location - its erupted magma was calculated 2,800 cubic km. Particles and gases from the eruption were said to have remained in the air for six years - thus causing reduction of global temperature which may be as drastic as 10 degrees Celcius-The Samosir Island, in the middle of Lake Toba, was formed around 60,000 years after the eruption - The magma pressures from beneath the lake were starting to build up again, thus causing the ground to be pushed up and appearing above in the form of an island - The next eruption of Toba is predicted to occur around 300 thousand years from now.
Lake Toba is the largest lake in South East Asia measuring 100km in length and 30 km wide, and 505 m. (1,666 ft.) at its deepest point, with a surface elevation of about 900 m . It is also one of the deepest and highest lakes in the world.
